Iimagine you talk to a team member who wants help dealing with someone else. It’s very common scenario.
This ‘someone else’ is the GHOST in the conversation…it is someone who is not physically in the room, but ‘there’ in spirit.
How do you tell good from bad coaching when a GHOST is present?
Just observe how much attention the GHOST gets!
A NOVICE coach will get distracted trying to understand the ghost.
(“Tell me more about this person? What drives her? What is she like?”)
An EXPERIENCED coach instead focuses on the person who is IN the room.
(“What’s challenging for YOU here? What’s in YOUR control?”)
It is a momentous difference.
Don’t coach the ghost.
Coach the real person in front of you!
