A note from Maik

How many bosses have you had so far in your career? And what percent of them would you consider good?

I have opened my leadership workshop with those same two questions for eight years, everywhere I go. The answer barely moves. Most people land near one in four.

That one number is the reason IntelliCoach exists. Let me tell you what I have learned from it, and what I am trying to do about it.

The answer barely moves.

I have now asked thousands of people those two questions, in start-ups and in Fortune 500s, across Asia, Europe, and the US. The average comes back near one in four. This is my own count, not a scientific study, and I say that plainly. But after thousands of conversations the pattern is hard to ignore. Good leadership is still the exception, not the rule.

It is rarely about bad intent.

Almost everyone who steps into a management role wants to do well. The gap is usually inexperience, a title nobody trained them for, and quietly copying whatever role models they happened to inherit. Good leadership is a skill, and skills can be learned. That single idea is why I do this work.

Why this matters more than it looks.

Gallup found that a manager accounts for up to seventy percent of the variance in their team's engagement. Your manager is your connecting point to the whole organisation, and when that point is brittle, people quietly sit it out or move on. People join organisations, and they leave managers. That is one of the most expensive problems a company can carry, and one of the most avoidable. When leadership works, people stay, and they do their best work.

What good leadership actually looks like.

The leaders people remember are coach-like. Instead of handing down the answer, they say, "Here is the challenge. You are close to it. What are your thoughts?" My own two good bosses were nothing alike, one warm and funny, the other stern and exacting, yet both let me do my best work and made me want to stay. Leadership is a contact sport. It lives in real conversations, and it cannot be outsourced, not even to AI. You do not need a hundred techniques. You need the small set of skills that carry most of the weight, the roughly twenty percent that delivers eighty percent of the impact.

Why there are three ways to work with me.

The deepest work I do is one-on-one, stakeholder-centered executive coaching, helping a single leader become more effective with the people around them. That work changes individuals, but my time is limited and I cannot reach everyone that way. So I also run group workshops, where I build those same power skills with a whole room at once. And because coaching is not the right moment or the right budget for everyone, I create digital products you can buy for a modest fee and work through at your own pace. Many people start with a digital product, join a workshop later, and some go on to one-on-one coaching. IntelliCoach is the place that holds all three.

I want to flip the ratio.

My ambition is to turn that first number around, so that one day people answer the second question with eighty percent or more. A world where your manager is someone you would describe as a good listener, direct, and someone who actually cares. Where you are seen, and not treated as a number. Better leaders make better places to work, and that is worth building in the open. Thank you for being part of it.
