βœ… Exploring the Dynamics of Coachability in Coaching

We often talk about β€œcoachability” like it’s a fixed traitβ€”a yes/no checkbox that determines whether someone can benefit from coaching. But what if coachability isn’t a permanent quality, and instead something that ebbs and flows based on context? In a recent conversation between two experienced coaches, this idea took center stage. They argued that coachability varies by topic, timing, and the relationship between coach and clientβ€”and that coaches play a major role in creating the conditions where coachability can thrive.

Coachability Depends on Context

  • Topic: People may be open to coaching in one domain (e.g., strategic thinking) but guarded in another (e.g., conflict management). Emotional stakes, identity, and perceived competence all influence openness.

  • Timing: When someone is under acute stress, mid-crisis, or facing significant change, they may be less available to introspectβ€”even if they’re generally receptive in calmer periods.

  • Relationship: Trust, safety, and rapport form the foundation. Without a sense that the coach understands and respects them, clients often protect themselves rather than explore.

Bottomline? Coachability is dynamic and co-created. By staying curious, using nonjudgmental judgment, and intentionally building readiness, coaches unlock more honest conversations and more sustainable change.

Your next breakthrough isn’t about being more coachableβ€”it’s about creating the conditions where coaching works.
