Picture this: you're dancing with someone who's just not into it. You're leading, pulling, and stepping on each other's feet. It's a mess, right?
That's what coaching an unwilling person feels like. Coaching is a partnership, a dance where both need to be active participants: a skilled coach and a coachable individual.
As a Leader, how do you spot a coachable person? Look for:
1. Willingness to Change: Do they want to grow? A lack of growth mindset is a warning sign. Remember, you can't force change.
2. Feeling of Safety: A coaching relationship needs trust. Without it, you'll only get surface-level engagement.
3. Acceptance of Feedback: Can they handle feedback without getting defensive? Acknowledging mistakes is key.
4. Self-Awareness: Do they understand their role in outcomes and consider others' perspectives?
5. Balance in Self-Perception: Are they able to discuss their strengths and weaknesses honestly, without being overly defensive or self-praising?
6. Openness to New Methods: Do they bring fresh ideas and embrace change?
7. Willingness to Take Risks: Are they ready to step out of their comfort zone for growth?
8. Love of Learning: Do they enjoy learning for its own sake?
9. Emotional Stability: Coaching isn't therapy. They need to be self-managed, free from addictions or substance dependence.
Even spotting one or two of these traits can indicate a successful coaching journey.
Who would you consider a 'hidden gem' for coaching opportunities?
