When someone comes to you for help with a problem, it's natural to want to jump in and solve it right away. However, there are often two types of problems at play: the "presented" problem and the underlying "real" problem that needs addressing. In my experience they are often not the same thing.
Consider this scenario:
Team Member: "I'm struggling to get my weekly reports completed on time."
Manager: "Okay, let's take a look at the report format and see what we can streamline."
While this response comes from a helpful place, it fails to dig deeper into what might really be going on.
To uncover the real issue, try asking this powerful question:
"What would be different for you if you solved this problem?"
Here's how this might play out:
Team Member: "I'm struggling to get my weekly reports completed on time."
Manager: "I understand. Let me ask you this: what would be different for you if you were able to get these reports done consistently?"
Team Member: "Hmm. I guess I would have more time and energy to focus on our top strategic project, which I'm honestly feeling behind on."
Manager: "Ah, I see. So is this really about the report itself, or is it more about managing your energy and priorities effectively?"
Team Member: "That's a great point. I think it's definitely the latter. I need to take a step back and reassess how I'm allocating my time and energy."
By asking "What would be different if...?", you create an opportunity for deeper reflection and insight. This question helps to surface the true challenges and goals that are driving the situation, allowing you to collaborate on solutions that address the real problem at hand.
So, here's my challenge to you this week: when someone comes to you with a problem, resist the urge to jump straight into solving mode. Instead, ask this powerful question and see where the conversation leads. You might be surprised at the insights and breakthroughs that emerge.
I'd love to hear how it goes for you! Reply to this email and let me know what you discover.
To your success this week!
P.S. If you found this insight helpful, consider sharing it with a colleague or friend who could also benefit from more effective problem-solving strategies. Together, we can all learn to lead with greater impact and purpose.
