Thought for Today: At times, the most effective response isn't an immediate answer.
The next time a capable individual approaches you with a question, resist the urge to provide an instant answer just to clear your plate. Instead, activate your curiosity. Pose questions like, "What makes this issue important for you?"
For example, a team member may ask you: "Do you have resources on Agile Project Management?"
You could simply send them a file or web link. However, they probably could have found that information themselves, right?
Instead: "I'm curious, what makes you ask? What do you hope to gain from it?"
And the team member might sigh and respond: "I feel we’re stuck. We're grappling with never-ending design changes, and I find myself delaying milestones often. I’m searching for a different approach."
This is your opportunity to say, "That sounds challenging. Let’s explore this further. I’d like to understand the full scope of the situation and consider how I might assist you. What do you mean by 'a different approach'?"
This approach:
1. Acknowledging Their Voice: It shows you value their perspective.
2. Space for Thought: Allows both parties a moment to reflect.
3. Fostering Meaningful Dialogue: Opens the door to deeper, more fruitful discussions.
4. Informed Responses: Ensures your answers are rooted in real understanding, not just quick assumptions.
Let's embrace curiosity first!
