Being Present – And why we keep failing at it

Being Present – Sounds mundane but it’s the trickiest skill for any Coaching Leader to pull off. Being present means to single-task, to focus on what (or who!) is right there in front of you at this moment.

Why are many of us bad at it too often (I am certainly not excluding myself here)? Not because of bad intentions. Paradoxically, it is exactly the opposite.

I once read about the β€˜Elusive 600’ (http://bit.ly/2w5sjnq):

– You have the mental capacity for 750 words per minute.
– People speak at about 150 words per minute.
– That leaves 600 extra words per minute.
– That’s the excess mental bandwidth.
– That’s the Elusive 600.

And we fill those elusive 600 too easily with other β€˜stuff’, believing it makes us perform more and better. But what we are doing is to basically throw away the 150 words per minute given to us by the other person.

The reality is we can only focus on 1 cognitively challenging task at a time.

And the other person feels it and knows it if our attention is split.
