Coaching is no memory game

My thought of the day.

Coaching is about asking Great Questions.

Or is it?

Many people who learn how to coach get tripped up here. They try to desperately match a question they learned or read before to the coaching situation they are in.

The effect? It often destroys presence and creates a disconnect.

Coaching is not a memory game.

The reality is: Coaching is NOT all that much about Great Questions. Anyone can learn a list of questions and β€˜throw’ it at someone.

Instead, Coaching is about…Great QuestionING.

Small difference in wording, big difference in conversation impact.

What does that mean? It means that the most powerful questions are those that build on the exact words of the person in front of you.

When you do that, the impact is profound. It forces you to stay present and mentally β€˜walk’ with the person we are talking. You will also have to give up a β€˜great question’ what would have been a

good fit 30 seconds ago.

It is a skill that must be learned, but that in my opinion anyone can learn to great effect.

Enjoy Great QuestionING in your next conversation!
