Scenario:

A team member tells their manager, "I've been feeling really overwhelmed lately. Every time I finish one task, there are three more waiting for me. I'm always playing catch-up, and it's eroding my motivation and confidence. I fear that if this continues, I won't be able to deliver my best work."

Manager's Possible Essence Statements:

Here's how the manager could encapsulate the essence of these sentiments:

⚈ "I appreciate your openness. It sounds like you're feeling overwhelmed by an ever-growing list of tasks."

⚈ "It seems the relentless pace of work is affecting your motivation and confidence."

⚈ "You're expressing concern about your ability to maintain high-quality performance."

⚈ "You feel like you’re perpetually playing catch-up."

⚈ "You believe the workload is challenging your capacity to excel."

Close with the validating question, "Did I capture that correctly?"

Why This Matters:

This approach demonstrates your eagerness to establish a genuine connection. It signals that you take the other person's perspective seriously and seek to make them feel understood. Btw, all these summary statements fall within an interpretive 'ballpark'; there is no objective 'correct' essence statement. The goal is also not correctness, but validation and connection.
