The Way a Coach Gives Feedback

What is the difference between ‘Giving Feedback’ and ‘Sharing Observations’?

Feedback is a loaded term. Ask anybody ‘Can I give you some feedback?’ and their alarm bells will ring.

FEEDBACK typically has a certain character. It is often seen as judgemental, something that hurts. The likely impact? Defensiveness. Flight, flight, freeze.

On the other hand, ‘shared observations’ consciously separate intent and impact. While the feedback receiver might still be at fault, you create space for them to declare themselves. The focus is on the impact and observed behaviors (as opposed to judging character), and we do not automatically assume negative intent.

This podcast explores the difference between these two concepts with examples. It will explore why ‘sharing observations’ is a crucial skill for Leaders in the 21st century and why it is so tough!

Enjoy!
