In this episode of The Coaching Leader podcast, we look at something fundamental to coaching.
It is so important that without it, using a coaching approach would not work or even backfire.
It is the Coaching Mindset.
Donβt get carried away by the apparent βsoftnessβ that the term mindset implies. The Coaching mindset is absolutely essential. Without it, we will come across as inauthentic, false or even deceptive, even if we do our best to ask powerful questions and listen. Why? If we donβt believe that the person in front of us can figure things out, we should not coach. If we still do and try to ask powerful questions, we do this from an angle of negative expectations. And if there is one thing that we learned from cognitive bias studies, it is that we hardly fail to see what we look for. We go into a meeting with an employee expectation no useful ideas, then we are simply not in the position where we can coach.
In such a situation, we should rather examine what contributes to our current belief and potentially as a Leader move into a different kind of conversation that is not coaching.
