↗️ Fix the Car or Enjoy the Trip? 🚗🌟

🕑 3 min Read

Picture this: You're all packed for a dream road trip, but out of the blue, your car refuses to start.

Here's where the Problem-solving approach steps in, just like your reliable mechanic. It dives deep to find the root cause, wrestles with the complications, and doesn't rest until the car's up and running. The focus? "What's broken? How do we fix it?" You might even consider cutting your trip short just to get the car sorted.

But then, there's the journey itself, right?

That's where the Coaching approach comes in as an alternative, acting like that insightful travel buddy who reminds you of what's truly important. It questions, "Is your goal the car, or is it the adventure of the journey? What's *actually* needed for this trip to feel successful?" Maybe you decide to grab a rental instead and postpone the repairs on your own ride.

The Learning?

While Problem-solving is all about fixing the immediate issues, Coaching ensures your actions are focused towards what you actually want, i.e. your 'destination,' helping you spot and navigate around hurdles.

The two approaches might appear as similar, but they operate on entirely different wavelengths.

Let me share a story from my own experience: A few years ago, I assisted a manufacturing firm struggling with ongoing quality problems from their primary supplier. Their initial problem-solving approach? Endless, detail-oriented meetings to sort out one quality issue after another. However, when we embraced a coaching perspective, we instead envisioned the ideal supplier relationship and the benchmarks for recognizing it. Suddenly, it all made sense to them. The main obstacle wasn't the product quality--it was overcoming the escalating misunderstandings and interpersonal tensions. Once they strategized to resolve these, the quality problems began to diminish, almost like a positive 'side effect.'

So, when life tosses a wrench into your gears, pause for a second. Ask yourself: "Am I just fixing a 'car,' or is this a chance to discover an entirely new route?"

We can remember that aiming for the ideal outcome is often far more productive than just tackling the next problem on the list.

Wishing you a productive, focused week ahead!
