Happiness meansβ¦
βHappiness means that I get what I want.β
What do you think? Is this how it works?
In my opinion, it is true, but in a VERY limited way.
This kind of happiness by getting something is typically fleeting and short-lived. It feeds the βhedonic treadmillβ. This is the realisation that most pleasures we get become routine fast, and we need to get the next thing to give us the same level of enjoyment.
I offer an alternative frame.
Read it slowly.
βHappiness means wanting what you have.β
Let this sink in.
Read it again.
βHappiness means wanting what you have.β
This comes from Rabbi H. Schachtel and is one of the wisest statements I know.
It offers a radical reframe and a way out of chasing the next thing.
Therefore, hereβs a powerful coaching question for you.
Really, take a moment and think about it.
β‘οΈ What do you have that you donβt want enough?
Does this focus you on precious things you take for granted?
