This week, I want to share with you a fantastic podcast episode that I recently listened to while running. It was on one of my favorite podcasts: Hidden Brain and the episode was about “How to complain productively.” It’s about turning complaining into something productive and effective. I make a guess that we would also benefit from this for our own sanity!
What I loved about this episode was how it gave a lot of great examples of professional-level coaching skills at play. For example, Mike Baer shares how he reframed a complaint from a colleague about a research paper, helping him to see the bigger picture and ultimately making the revision better. Reframing is a key method that coaches use to help clients get themselves ‘unstuck’.
Furthermore, when we complain, we also often feel like we’re being proactive, like we’re doing something to address a problem. But too often, we’re just venting and not actually taking action to fix the situation. If someone instead gently (or not so gently) pushes us to think what’s in our own control, what we can do, we turn from victim to actor.
Have a listen. Hope you enjoy it!
