↗️ Let's WISE up our feedback!

🕑 2 min Read

I have given feedback to learners for a long time. Last week, I came across a method that would improve the way I do it in certain situations! It's simple and powerful and called 'Wise' feedback.

It ensures you do 3 things:

1️⃣ You convey high expectations.

2️⃣ You express genuine belief that the student can achieve those high expectations.

3️⃣ You provide concrete information and help to meet these expectations.

Simple and powerful. It builds trust, makes people feel valued AND is helpful.

How might this sound?

1️⃣ "It's important you impress our stakeholders next week with the presentation."

2️⃣ "You know the content. You know the stakeholders. You are THE expert. And I am excited for you to have the opportunity to excel here!"

3️⃣ "I recommend that you cut down to 10 slides and turn the presentation into a story to captivate them. Walk around the room."

By offering such feedback, you not only set high standards, but also give specific actions to consider. I admit, as someone professionally trained in coaching, my instinct is towards helping someone find their own resources in most situations. However, in certain learning situations like these, providing precise guidance can be a deciding factor.

What are your thoughts on the 'wise' approach to feedback?

How might it align with your philosophy?
