βœ… Mastering Productivity with the Hemingway Bridge Technique

Bridging isn’t procrastinationβ€”it’s strategy.

We grind late into the day, hit a wall, and promise ourselves we’ll pick it up tomorrow. Then tomorrow arrives and we can’t quite remember where we left off, our momentum is gone, and it takes 15–20 minutes just to warm up before we get anything done.

There’s a better way. It’s called the Hemingway Bridge.

The idea comes from Ernest Hemingway’s own writing practice: he didn’t stop when it got hardβ€”he stopped when he knew exactly what to do next. He ended sessions with the next sentence already forming in his mind. That β€œbridge” carried him from today’s flow into tomorrow’s start.

How to build your Hemingway Bridge (in 5 minutes)

1. Decide the exact next step

  • Write the first line of the email, slide, or paragraph.

  • Outline the next three bullets you’ll tackle.

  • Name the file you’ll create and where it will live.

2. Reduce Friction

  • Open all the documents, tabs, and research you’ll need.

  • Put the 5 key files on your desktop or in one folder named β€œSTART HERE.”

  • Paste links/resources at the top of your working doc.

3. Set a specific starting cue

  • Calendar a 90-minute focus block.

  • Write a one-line β€œstart instruction” at the top of your doc: β€œAt 9:00, draft bullets for Section 2β€”no editing.”

4. Make the first move easy

  • If you β€œeat the frog,” add sauce. Make the first bite tiny: a checklist, a sketch, a bullet outline.

  • If you’re drained, choose an easy-but-relevant action that builds momentum (e.g., write the email you already know how to write).

5. Close the loop

  • Leave yourself a breadcrumb: β€œNext: justify point #3 with client example A.”

Take five minutes to write the next sentence, open the right files, and calendar a 90-minute block. Then tomorrow at start time, don’t thinkβ€”just cross the bridge you built.
