Bridging isnβt procrastinationβitβs strategy.
We grind late into the day, hit a wall, and promise ourselves weβll pick it up tomorrow. Then tomorrow arrives and we canβt quite remember where we left off, our momentum is gone, and it takes 15β20 minutes just to warm up before we get anything done.
Thereβs a better way. Itβs called the Hemingway Bridge.
The idea comes from Ernest Hemingwayβs own writing practice: he didnβt stop when it got hardβhe stopped when he knew exactly what to do next. He ended sessions with the next sentence already forming in his mind. That βbridgeβ carried him from todayβs flow into tomorrowβs start.
How to build your Hemingway Bridge (in 5 minutes)
1. Decide the exact next step
Write the first line of the email, slide, or paragraph.
Outline the next three bullets youβll tackle.
Name the file youβll create and where it will live.
2. Reduce Friction
Open all the documents, tabs, and research youβll need.
Put the 5 key files on your desktop or in one folder named βSTART HERE.β
Paste links/resources at the top of your working doc.
3. Set a specific starting cue
Calendar a 90-minute focus block.
Write a one-line βstart instructionβ at the top of your doc: βAt 9:00, draft bullets for Section 2βno editing.β
4. Make the first move easy
If you βeat the frog,β add sauce. Make the first bite tiny: a checklist, a sketch, a bullet outline.
If youβre drained, choose an easy-but-relevant action that builds momentum (e.g., write the email you already know how to write).
5. Close the loop
Leave yourself a breadcrumb: βNext: justify point #3 with client example A.β
Take five minutes to write the next sentence, open the right files, and calendar a 90-minute block. Then tomorrow at start time, donβt thinkβjust cross the bridge you built.
