I've been reflecting on how small shifts in our daily routines can lead to significant improvements over time (after John Maxwell: "You can never change your life until you change something you do daily.")
Today, I want to share a technique that's been incredibly useful for me and many of my coaching clients. It's called GDD - Good, Difficult, Different.
Here's the essence of it:
Each morning, take a moment to ask yourself these three questions:
1️⃣ What was Good about yesterday?
2️⃣ What was Difficult?
3️⃣ What will I do Differently today?
This straightforward practice can be surprisingly impactful. It helps you:
• Recognize your achievements (even the small ones)
• Learn from challenges
• Make intentional adjustments
But GDD isn't just for personal reflection. In our professional coaching skills courses, we use it as a powerful debriefing tool after practice coaching sessions.
Here's how we do it: After each coaching practice, an appointed 'facilitator' (another course participant) asks the coach three key questions:
• What did you do that went well for you?
• What was difficult for you? (btw, NOT 'what did you do wrong?')
• Based on this, what do you want to do differently next time you coach?
This approach has proven to be fantastic for helping coaches reflect on their practice while the experience is still fresh. It's concise, non-judgmental, and incredibly effective for learning and growth.
Whether you're looking to enhance your personal growth, refine your coaching skills, or simply reflect before the day starts to get its grip on you, give GDD a try. It's simple, effective, and could make a real difference. The power of GDD lies in its consistency. As you practice it daily, you'll likely notice a compounding effect of small improvements leading to significant growth over time.
I'm curious about your thoughts. How do you think this could fit into your daily routine or coaching practice?
Wish you lots of GDD moments this week :)
