We've all heard about growth mindset. It's that voice in our head that says, "I can't do this... yet" instead of "I'm just not good at this.", which is a fixed mindset.
But what if we applied this same thinking to how we view others? That's where the idea of an "external growth mindset" comes in. Let me explain.
This is what an internal growth mindset sounds like:
"I struggled with that presentation, but I know with practice I'll improve."
As opposed to an internal fixed mindset:
"Public speaking just isn't my thing. I'll never be good at it."
Now, let's look at how this might apply when directed to others:
Here's an example of an external growth mindset:
"John had a tough time with that project, but I believe he can learn from it and do better next time."
The external fixed mindset also might sound familiar:
"Sarah always misses deadlines. That's just how she is. I give up."
Switching on an external growth mindset means believing in others' ability to grow and improve. It's not about ignoring current performance, but about acknowledging the existence of potential for improvement. Who would we be to be able to judge that anyway?
This matters greatly for Leaders in relation to their team members.
If we don't believe our team members can grow, our attempts to coach them will feel hollow. People can sense when we're just going through the motions, while deep down we have given up on them.
Here's my recommendation.
This coming week, try to spot one area where you might have a fixed view of a team member ("The person is just that way"). How could you shift to a more growth-oriented perspective?
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
