It's an 'old' an familiar story. Imagine itβs January 1st, 2026. Youβre filled with energy, fresh from the holidays, and your New Yearβs resolution is crystal clear: "I will exercise three times a week!" You start strong, full of motivation. For a few weeks, you hit every session. You feel great.
Then, life happens. A busy week at work. A slight cold. You miss one session. Then another. And suddenly, that initial burst of energy, that unwavering commitment, starts to⦠fade. By March, the gym membership is a forgotten expense, and the running shoes are gathering dust.
Sound familiar? Itβs a story we all know too well (from friends, of course). This natural fading of enthusiasm, energy, and even knowledge isn't a personal failing; it's a universal human truth captured by something called the Decay Curve. The Allen Curve we talked about recently is a great example!
The Forgetting Curve is one of the best examples of the Decay Curve. You can 'beat' forgetting by regular reviewing and recall practice!
This was my lightbulb moment π‘: The Decay Curve visually illustrates how anything, from team cohesion after a great project launch to our personal commitment to a new habit, begins to decline if itβs not continuously nurtured. It's like a battery that slowly drains, even when not in active use. Without conscious "recharging," that initial high will simplyβ¦ decay.
The curve starts strong, then trends downwards. But here's the powerful part: you can create "sawtooth" spikes! These are your intentional interventions β those small, deliberate actions you take to boost momentum, reconnect, or refresh your knowledge. Think of it as plugging your battery back in for a quick charge.
So, as you step into the space between Christmas and New Year, a time ripe for reflection and renewed commitments, consider this:
What "batteries" in your life (relationships, skills, personal goals) are prone to this natural decay? And what small, consistent "recharges" β your personal "sawtooth" interventions β will you commit to, ensuring your most important intentions donβt simply fade away in 2026?
Let's not just make resolutions; let's build systems to sustain them.
