I talked with a manager this week who was incredibly frustrated with a new software rollout. He looked at me and said, "My team is simply not aligned on this."
That sounded so final. A complete dead end.
Here's what I personally believe: the words we use to describe our struggles often cement them into permanent realities.
I suggested he add one tiny word to the end of his sentence. Three letters.
"Yet."
"My team is not aligned on this.. YET."
That was quite a lightbulb moment for him.
By appending "yet" to a statement of limitation, you immediately transform a final judgment into a temporary point on a learning curve. It completely shifts the internal narrative from a fixed state to a growth orientation.
You might think this is just positive thinking fluff. But it isn't.
"Yet" validates the current, hard reality. It acknowledges the struggle. The team isn't aligned. That's true. But it refuses to accept that this state is permanent. It turns a cognitive dead end into a doorway.
Of course, the word doesn't do the work for you. You still have to walk through that doorway to get the alignment.
So. The next time you catch yourself or your team saying "I am not a good public speaker" or "We haven't mastered this skill".. try adding "yet."
What dead end can you turn into a doorway today?
