↗️ \"We already tried that!\"

It was 2012, during a crucial team meeting. A team member shared an idea about solving a complex problem. I still remember my immediate response: "Yeah, we already tried that."


Oops.


The room fell silent. I hadn't meant to be dismissive, but my words landed with a thud.


I thought I was being factual and direct.

But in reality, I had shut down exploration in an instant.


It's easy to fall into this pattern with phrases like:

- "We've been here before."

- "Thanks, I already knew that."

- "You don't get it."

- "Well, *actually*, it's this way..."

- "I like it, BUT..."


These statements are small daggers that accumulate and diminish others. Even seemingly harmless remarks like "Oh, that's so innovative" can be patronizing with the wrong tone.


Instead, when you disagree, pause and ask a question:

- "Tell me more?"

- "What makes this idea work for you?"

- "How does your idea relate to our previous attempts?"

- "What makes this innovative in your eyes?"

- "Right now, I can't see how this will work. Can you please explain it?"


At worst, this approach prevents hasty judgments. At best, it sparks creativity and builds momentum. Our workplaces need more open dialogue, instead of immediate judgment of exploration attempts!
